The Three Biggest Trends Driving the Team and SecureNext Softwares.
Post On: May 22, 2012
Like everybody else, the team at SecureNext has seen a tremendous amount of change take place over the last five years. We expect the rate of change to if anything, continue at an increasing rate. While there are many variables that have affected our business, there are three trends that really stand out that we believe will not only affect us but also many of our clients and competitors. These three trends include:
Social media refers to Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, LinkedIn and others. I would however argue that a better term is actually ‘Social Business’ rather than social media. We are seeing social media or social business affecting just about every institution ranging including government, non-profit and the private sector including both business to business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) companies and industries. Both B2B and B2C companies have realized both top-line and bottom line benefits as a result of embracing social media. Examples of top-line benefits include increasing sales, increasing leads, increasing revenues, finding new markets and so forth. Bottom line benefits include such things as cost savings for such things as customer service and support costs and so on.
Business to consumer companies are those companies whose end users are primarily consumers. Business to business companies are those companies whose end users are primarily other businesses.
We have seen the importance of social media or social business increase for us and for many of our clients over the past several years. We expect this trend to continue and increase in the coming years.
Up to a couple of years ago, all of our work consisted of only websites. Over the past couple of years, we have seen a rapidly increasing demand for mobile development services. This is to be expected since in the United State and Europe, a person’s first Internet ‘experience’ was through a ‘fixed’ Internet connection such as through a PC. In the meantime, in many of the faster growing parts of the World or developing countries, a person’s first Internet experience is likely to be not through a PC but rather through a mobile phone. This includes such countries as India, Brazil, South Africa, Indonesia and many more. This is not to say that the growth rate for mobile access to the Internet has been low in the United States and Europe. As you know, mobile access to the Internet has been increasing in developing countries as well for some time.
We expect mobile access to the Internet to continue to increase in both developed and developing countries for some time. We have been seeing increasing interest in mobile development services for some time now.
Commoditization of Software Development
When SecureNext started ten years ago, all development was custom in nature meaning that everything that we did was to the client’s specification. About five years ago, the industry changed with open source content management systems such as Drupal and Wordpress, amongst others The development costs and time to market for many clients decreased. Projects that used to take a team months to complete could now see the same thing done to a degree with one developer in less time using an open source content management system and plug-ins or modules. The end result has been the software development services industry becoming a very competitive place to business and prosper. Those companies that are not finding a way to evolve with the changing times will soon fall to the side.
We expect this trend to continue and we expect software development companies such as ours to evolve by rolling out products and services that are complementary to software development. This includes software management services, online marketing services and more.
